4 Dog Parks to Visit This Season

Dogs Playing OutsideAs the summer unwinds and families become accustomed to their new school and work schedule, many forget that their dog is affected, too. While there are less activities revolving around the house, make sure to spend quality time with your pets.

One of the best ways to enjoy this beautiful weather is visiting a dog park! Alexandria (and the surrounding areas) has numerous, bountiful dog parks that will make your dogs leap with joy. Remember to follow the dog park rules, bring a bowl for water, and trash bags. Most importantly, have fun with your dog!

Remember that not every dog is a candidate for the dog park, and that there are pros and cons even for those dogs who are appropriate candidates for dog park fun.  Before you leash your dog up for the park, take a look at what the ASPCA advises about the subject.  You should also check out Dr. Sophia Yin’s article on Dog Park Etiquette.

Four Mile Run

Best for: Frisbee, Fetch, long runs

On the north east side of Alexandria, this unfenced facility is perfect for playing Frisbee and fetch. It is also connected to trails that go through Arlington and Washington DC, so you can take long runs with your dog, too.

Simpson Dog Park

Best for: Exercise, socialization, quieter park

On the east side of Alexandria, Simpson is next to Eugene Simpson Stadium Park. This fenced in area is perfect for dog socialization and exercise.  The park has both gravel and grass, and a water fountain for your dog to drink from.

Shirlington Park

Address:  2601 S Arlington Mill Dr, Arlington

Best for: Energetic dogs, swimming, long runs

Located on the south side of Arlington, Shirlington Park is one of the most popular, fenced dog parks in the area. Aside from the dog park, there is a creek that is perfect for exploring and swimming. You can rinse off your dog at the dog wash at the entrance of the park, too.

Dog Run Park at Carlyle

Address: 450 Andrew’s Lane

Best for: big and small dogs, socialization, exercise

Located on the south side of Alexandria, Dog Run Park has two fenced areas for small and big dogs. You can either sit back and relax on the park benches or throw a toy for your dog to play with. It is great for dogs that are better with similar-sized dogs, socialization, and exercise.
