About Heidi

Heidi Meinzer

I am an attorney and animal lover, not necessarily in that order. Ten years into my practice, a group of dedicated animal advocates contacted me to help them prosecute a heart wrenching and frustrating dog hoarding case.  There was the light bulb moment—when I knew what direction my practice was headed.
In my animal law practice, I represent owners and their dogs facing dangerous dog proceedings, counsel new and existing pet care companies with contract and other corporate matters, and advise rescues about issues concerning their adoption contracts and confidential and proprietary information.

In 2000, I started my legal career fighting for the “underdog” as a public defender in Alexandria, Virginia. In 2006, I moved to a law firm in Arlington, Virginia, where I practiced criminal law and branched into civil litigation in various areas, including employment issues, land use and real estate matters, trust and estate cases, and bankruptcy litigation. In 2013, I formed the Law Office of Heidi Meinzer, PLLC in order to devote my time and resources to a focused litigation and animal law practice.

I am licensed to practice law in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia and Washington State.  I served as the Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Animal Law Section from 2013 to 2014, and I am also a member of the Washington State Bar Animal Law Section.  I am on the Board of Directors of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue and the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, and have proudly volunteered for my local animal shelter run by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.  I am also an at-large member of a Work Group organized by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to review Virginia’s Comprehensive Animal Care Laws.

I have the best second job anyone could ask for as a Lead Trainer with the award-winning dog training staff at Fur-Get Me Not and as a trainer offering K9 Nose Work travel classes with Canine Copilots. In an effort to keep up to speed on animal behavior and dog training (and to keep up with my canine companions, Sophie and Boomer), I am a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the National Association of Canine Scent Work. In 2013, I became a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and a Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI). I also received a Certificate of Excellence from Dr. Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals: The Fundamental Principles and Procedures of Teaching and Learning.

Many thanks to Jeannette Smith and the Arlington Examiner for the Sept. 20, 2011 article, “Heidi Meinzer is a Champion of Companion Animals.” I could not have done a more eloquent or thorough job of describing my road to building an animal law practice.
