I have always been driven to helping those who need it most. My career has taken numerous unexpected turns, only to land right where I have wanted and needed to be.
After serving in the United States Peace Corps, I returned to the United States and attended law school. In 2000, I graduated from Georgetown University Law Center and began my legal career as a public defender for the City of Alexandria, Virginia. In 2006, I moved to a law firm in Arlington, Virginia, where I practiced civil litigation. In 2013, I formed the Law Office of Heidi Meinzer, PLLC. Very soon after starting my firm, I had the opportunity to represent one of the only police unions in Virginia with collective bargaining rights. Shortly afterwards, I was also asked to represent Alexandria’s police union. With deep roots in Alexandria, where I have lived since 1997, I jumped at the chance to do so.
My practice focuses on labor law, specifically representing police officers and police unions in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland. My varied legal training has prepared me in a unique way for this work. Due to the fact that Virginia has not had collective bargaining for public employees for decades, I am one of the only Virginia attorneys with true collective bargaining experience in the public sector. Additionally, I am one of few attorneys to bring deep experience in both criminal law and civil litigation and arbitration to my public safety labor practice.
As we move into an era where public sector employees will once again have the ability to collectively bargain in Virginia, I am excited to bring my skill set where it is so critically needed. We are incredibly lucky to have highly trained and professional law enforcement agencies here, and I am grateful to be so well positioned to provide this clientele with my services at this vital time.
I continue my deep commitment to animal welfare civic activities, including serving on the Board of Directors for Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. With my legal background, a large part of my civic activities are dedicated to legislative efforts – a skill set that translates well to my public safety labor law practice.
