I have always been driven to help those most in need, and my career has taken numerous unexpected turns, only to land right where I have wanted and needed to be.
After serving in the United States Peace Corps, I attended law school. In 2000, I graduated from Georgetown University Law Center and began my legal career as a public defender for the City of Alexandria, Virginia. In 2006, I joined a law firm in Arlington, Virginia to practice civil litigation. In 2013, I left that form to form the Law Office of Heidi Meinzer, PLLC.
Very soon after starting my firm, I had the opportunity to represent one of the only police unions with collective bargaining rights in Virginia, the Metropolitan Airports Police Association, IUPA Local 5004. A few years later, I was asked to represent the Alexandria Committee of Police, IUPA Local 5. With deep roots in Alexandria, where I have lived since 1997, I jumped at the chance to do so. I’m proud to also represent the Prince William County Police Association, IUPA Local 5010.
My varied legal training has prepared me in a unique way to practice public safety labor law. Because Virginia has not allowed public employees to collectively bargaining for decades, I am one of the only Virginia attorneys with true collective bargaining experience in the public sector. Additionally, I am one of few attorneys to bring deep experience in criminal, civil and administrative law to my practice.
As we move into an era where public sector employees will once again have the ability to collectively bargain in Virginia, I am excited to apply my skill set where it is so critically needed. We are incredibly lucky to have highly trained and professional law enforcement agencies here, and I am grateful to be well positioned to provide them my services at this vital time.
I continue my deep commitment to animal welfare civic activities, including service with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. With my legal background, my civic service includes a focus on legislative efforts – a skill set that translates well to my public safety labor law practice.
